The City of Vancouver purchased the Orpheum from Famous Players, declared
it a heritage building, and renovated it extensively,
reopening it in 1977. Renovations included a new mural in
the dome in the centre of the auditorium ceiling, a
permanent orchestra shell and, in 1983, the restoration and
expansion of the lobby. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was
and is the primary tenant of the venue. The Orpheum's superb
acoustics place it among the premiere venues for unreinforced
(acoustic) classical music in North America. |
